This month, more than 1,000 people received notifications of their free enrollment in the AI Programming with Python Nanodegree program from Udacity through the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI & ML) Scholarship program. With this, we have awarded 6,000 Nanodegree scholarships with AWS with a value of more than $24 million dollars!
In 2022, Udacity and AWS started offering Nanodegree scholarships to aspiring AI/ML engineers in collaboration with professional organizations leading initiatives to increase the diversity and talent in technical roles, including Girls In Tech and the National Society of Black Engineers. The AWS AI & ML Scholarship program helps underrepresented and underserved students in tech get ready for a career in AI with access to Udacity online learning programs and mentorship. Participants also attend virtual events with industry pros and have access to mentorship from both Udacity and AWS advisors.
To highlight inspiring stories from graduates applying ML skills gained through this program to drive positive changes that benefit society, a docuseries called “AWS Future Self” recently launched its fourth episode about Gedeon Baende in San Diego. As part of his capstone project, Gedeon is building an AI solution that non-invasively diagnoses electric vehicle batteries and proposes second-life applications to reduce waste. The first three episodes aired last year and won a Tribeca X award for a brand storytelling series. There are two more episodes to come later this summer.
In the awarded Nanodegree program – AI Programming with Python – scholarship recipients will learn a variety of concepts and skills such as Python data types and operators, NumPy, matplotlib, backpropagation, and how to train neural networks with hands-on projects such as how to create their own image classifiers. The program, available to All-Access subscribers, Udacity enterprise customers, and scholarship recipients, lays a solid foundation for building neural networks with practical projects like vector visualization and Python data types. These real-world projects support the immediate application of new skills.
Additionally, all scholarship applicants are eligible for free access to our AWS Generative AI course launched earlier this year. This course, worth $250, offers an in-depth exploration of generative AI, emphasizing foundational concepts and real-world applications.
In the U.S., Udacity has partnered with top employers to provide scholarships and paths to tech careers for the past decade, including 5,000 scholarships to Nanodegree programs for veterans, minorities, and other underserved students in 2015 through the TechHire Initiative in collaboration with employers including AT&T and Accenture, as well as 50,000 Grow with Google scholarships in the U.S. in 2017. Globally, we’ve teamed up with organizations like Bertelsmann and government organizations like the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Egypt to award Udacity Nanodegree program scholarships to tens of thousands of people.
We are accepting applications for the next wave of 1,000 AWS AI & ML Scholarships through September 30, 2024 here. Any student over the age of 16 who self-identifies as underserved or underrepresented in technology, and is currently enrolled in high school or college, may apply.
